The raw material for galvanized iron wire is high-quality wire rod(SAE1008). After drawing and shaping, the low carbon steel iron wire rod becomes iron wires of varying thicknesses. These iron wires then undergo a galvanization process(hot-dipped galvanization or electro-galvanization), during which a protective layer of zinc is applied to the iron wire surfaces, resulting in galvanized iron wire.

The size of GI tie wire usually refers to the wire diameter of the GI tie wire, which is the total thickness of the iron wire plus the galvanized layer.

Internationally, the wire gauges BWG, AWG and SWG are commonly used to denote the wire diameter of galvanized iron(GI tie) wire.Although the specific values of wire gauges represented by the three different standards are not consistent, the BWG gauge, AWG gauge,SWG gauge all share a common feature: the larger the number of gauge, the smaller the wire diameter.

III. GI tie iron wire size conversion

Due to the different commonly used GI tie wire diameter terminologies in various countries or regions, such as South Africa typically expressing wire diameter of GI tie wire in millimeters, and Dubai generally using gauge to denote the wire diameter of GI tie wire. Therefore, understanding the conversion between different gauges and millimeters is also very important.

Taking the bwg standard as the example:

What gauge is #9 tie wire? The #9 represents the GI tie wire with the diameter of 9 gauge.

How thick is a 16 gauge binding wire? 1.65mm.

GI tie wire 16 diameter means 16 BWG gauge or 1.65mm GI tie wire diameter. 

GI tie wire #12 means 12 BWG gauge or 2.77mm GI tie wire diameter.

GI binding wire 18 gauge in mm is 1.24mm.

Galvanized iron wire is primarily used as the GI rebar tie wire in the construction industry.

In construction projects, the GI tie wire's gauge (thickness), length, and breaking strength must be matched to the weight and size of the objects being bound, as well as the environmental conditions the GI tie wire will encounter. For example, the thicker wire may be needed for outdoor tasks, whereas a thinner GI tie wire could be suitable for indoor, lightweight tasks.

There are several types of GI tie wire, which include: cut wire.u-type wire,loop ties and coil wire.

►The cut GI tie wire is cut to a standardized length following straightening, offering customizable length to meet the specific needs of customers,ensuring convenience in both transportation and application.

►The u type GI tie wire is suitable for fastening threaded steel bars in the construction tasks. These GI tie wire come in lengths ranging from 250 mm to 600 mm. The u type GI tie wire can reduce waste, making the u type GI tie wire a preferred choice in construction projects.

►The loop tie wire features two pre-shaped loops, and provide a fast and secure hold for bags, cables, rebar, and pipes.

►The coil GI tie wire is the most frequently used packaging galvanized iron binding wire type. The small coil is about 0.35kg to 25kg per coil and the big coil is about 100kg to 500 kg per coil.The coil package makes the coil GI tie wire convenient for transportation. Additionally, the coil GI tie wire can be tailored to the desired length during use for construction projects.

In construction projects, the most frequently used wire diameter for GI tie wire are from 16 gauge to 18 gauge.The GI loop tie wire diameter is usually 20 gauge or 21 gauge.

In agriculture, the GI tie wire must be strong enough to withstand wind, rain, and other natural elements, while also being flexible enough to wrap securely around stems or posts without causing damage. 

►Galvanized tying wire can be used to secure plant vines to fences, guiding the plants' growth in the specific direction, as seen in grape trellises.The wire diameters of GI tie wire for grape trellises are from 12 gauge to 16 gauge.

►Previously, GI tie wire was used to bind harvested crops for convenient transport. Even today, many farms use galvanized iron baling wire for bundling hay and the like.The wire diameter of GI tie wire for baling hay range from 9 gauge to 16 gauge.
