Nail wire refers to a specialized type of wire used in the manufacturing of common iron wire nails. A.Pre-treatment of wire rod

By drawing,as the wire rod passes through each die, it undergoes plastic deformation, resulting in a reduction in diameter and an elongation of the wire,finally, the wire rod reaches the customer needed size.


IV. Annealing 

A. Purpose of annealing in nail wire production

Stress Relief: Annealing helps alleviate internal stresses that may have been induced during previous manufacturing processes, such as wire drawing. This stress relief improves the overall ductility and machinability of the nail wire.

Recrystallization: The heat applied during annealing initiates recrystallization, leading to the formation of new, strain-free grains in the wire rod's microstructure. This results in a more uniform and refined material, contributing to improved mechanical properties.

Softening: Annealing reduces the hardness of the wire rod, making it softer and more pliable. This increased malleability makes the subsequent manufacturing steps easier in the nail-making machine.

Dimensional Stability: Annealing helps maintain the dimensional stability of the wire rod, preventing excessive distortion or deformation during subsequent manufacturing processes. This ensures that the nail wire maintains the desired dimensions for the production of consistent and high-quality nails.

Improved Drawing Performance: If the wire rod undergoes further drawing or cooling processes, annealing becomes essential. It enhances the wire rod's ability to undergo subsequent deformation without the risk of brittleness or material failure.

Enhanced Mechanical Properties: Annealing contributes to improvements in the wire rod's mechanical properties, including tensile strength and elongation. This is critical for producing common iron wire nails with the necessary strength and durability.

B. Common Iron Nail Wire Annealing process

Heating: The wire rod is heated to a specific temperature within a controlled environment. The temperature is chosen based on the material composition and desired outcomes of the annealing process. Commonly, temperatures range between 800 to 900 degrees Celsius for low carbon steel wire rod.

Holding Time: Once the desired temperature is reached, the wire rod is held at that temperature for a defined period. 

Cooling: After the holding time, the wire rod is gradually cooled. The cooling rate is an important factor influencing the final material properties. Slow cooling rates are often preferred for achieving the desired mechanical characteristics.

Post-Annealing Inspection: Once the wire rod has been annealed and cooled, it undergoes post-annealing inspection to ensure that the desired material properties have been achieved. Any deviations can be identified and addressed at this stage.


V. Coiling and Nail making

A. Wire coiling

After the wire rod is cooled again, it is coiled by the nail wire making machine, which becomes the nail wire used to make common iron wire nails.

B. Nail making process
